As artificial intelligence increasingly influences cybersecurity, both defenders and attackers have started leveraging its power to achieve their goals. This dual-edged use of AI is prompting experts to call for a significant evolution in security practices. Recently, Phil Venables, Google Cloud’s CISO, issued a warning to businesses, urging everybody to adapt their cyber defenses to confront AI-driven threats.
While many existing risks and controls still apply, nuances in AI necessitate innovative tactics. Key threats such as model “hallucinations” (inaccurate content generation), data leakage, and prompt manipulation demand a robust security infrastructure to mitigate potential AI abuses.
Generative AI models face risks beyond those associated with traditional technology systems.
Protecting against these issues requires monitoring and refining AI-specific security frameworks and control mechanisms.
According to Venables, AI security needs to expand beyond conventional detection and response. AI should be leveraged both as a defense tool and to monitor potential abuses. In a recent Cloud Security Alliance Global AI Symposium, he emphasized that securing AI requires integrating new techniques alongside traditional cybersecurity practices.
To safeguard AI, common frameworks are needed that prevent the need to build security controls from scratch for every AI instance. Venables stressed that addressing AI security is an “end-to-end business process” more than a technical problem.
Google Cloud’s approach provides a framework for other organizations implementing AI. Ensuring data quality and lineage is crucial for reliable AI outputs. Venables recommended curating and tracking data usage to maintain integrity, noting that effective data management is vital to preventing “data poisoning,” where corrupt data skews a model’s results. AI models must be protected from tampering not only in their software but also in their underlying weights and parameters. This protection helps prevent backdoor risks that could compromise a business’s mission-critical processes.
Preventing external manipulation is essential. Adversaries might use hidden text in images or other inputs to manipulate model outputs. Filtering inputs and enforcing strong access controls on data and models are necessary for securing AI.
Securing AI requires not only input controls but also mechanisms to manage and monitor outputs. By implementing “circuit breakers” that halt or redirect processes when necessary, organizations can guard against both adversarial and unintended behaviors in AI systems. Output control, combined with comprehensive infrastructure monitoring, reduces operational risks associated with AI-driven actions.
Limiting the exposure and permissions of AI applications can mitigate potential risks. Running applications in secure, isolated environments (sandboxing) helps control risks tied to AI behavior. We can enforce access controls on models, data, and infrastructure, organizations ensure that only authorized individuals and applications interact with sensitive AI resources.
Constant monitoring of both input and output data, combined with rigorous logging, provides a real-time view of AI activity and can help detect potential abuses early. It is advised that implementing outbound filters or circuit breakers enables organizations to manage and restrict how AI interacts with real-world data and processes, adding a layer of defense against unpredictable AI actions.
The integration of generative AI into critical systems calls for a new cybersecurity framework. As Venables noted, it’s essential to “sanitize, protect, govern” AI data and enforce strong access controls across models, data, and infrastructure. With thorough filtering, observability, and controlled deployment, organizations can better defend against the complexities of AI risks. Google Cloud provides a valuable model for achieving these goals, leveraging a comprehensive approach to safeguard AI systems while promoting trusted and secure AI use.
As AI continues to evolve, businesses must ensure end-to-end AI security that not only protects against known risks but is also adaptable to emerging threats.
